The Restoration

The restoration of the Capitol began in earnest in 1993, with a groundswell of public support and the formation of the Capitol Theatre Heritage Foundation, a non-profit organization determined not only to resurrect the once-proud building, but to provide Port Hope and Northumberland County with a badly needed community auditorium and venue for the arts. To date, over $6 million dollars has been raised.

Luckily, much of the original decoration in the Capitol has survived. The forest murals, face walled courtyard, lanterns, awnings, and blue cove lighting in the auditorium are all original. The ceiling was over-painted a dark blue at some time in the past and there had been some holes punched in it. The sign was repainted in its original colours, the frescoes were repainted and the marquee, missing for several years, was replicated to its original design.
