The End of an Era
The Capitol Theatre operated continuously as a cinema for 57 years until if finally closed on February 5, 1987. Like many small-town theatres, the Capitols heyday was over with the arrival of the VCR. It had become a money-losing venture when average attendance dropped to about 30 patrons per night! Its owners, Famous Players, sold the building and stripped the theatre of all seating and projection equipment in order to eliminate competition for its nearby cinema, the Park Theatre, in Cobourg. Its frescoes soiled by years of cigarette smoke, the Capitol Theatre now sat empty, its future uncertain.
